A Lovers’ Hideaway

It's difficult to find this hotel, opened in 2006, amongst the maze of streets behind the ruins of the Roman forum. On the edge of Rione Monti this is one of the most engaging areas of Rome.

Situated in the bend of a tiny road, The Inn at the Roman Forum is a world of surprises.

As you pass through the small front door of the hotel you enter a corridor along which you will find a stairwell decorated with a cascade of pearls, and hidden at the back of the ground floor, is the reception.

Even though it is very chic, with many antiques, it is hard to imagine what comes next.

Surprise number one: the terrace on the top floor. Ideal for breakfasting on a sunny day, the terrace displays a magnificent view over the rooftops and the Altar of the Fatherland.

Surprise number two: the hanging garden. Also on the top floor but at the rear of the building, it opens out onto a small paradise of greenery: a tiny garden floating above Rome, with parasols, plants and a chorus of chirping birds.

Surprise number three: the Master Garden Rooms. This is a small house with two bedrooms, four-poster beds, rustic furniture and contemporary decor.

Surprise number four: the bedroom decor. If by chance you have the opportunity to stay here often, you will notice that each of the 14 rooms is decorated uniquely, in very different styles. Some are very contemporary, others much more classic, some are very minimalist, whilst others are rather extravagant. Four-poster beds are in abundance and you will find a lot of very beautiful furniture, much of which is antique.

The rooms benefit from beautiful high ceilings with antique beams. As well as the decor all the modern conveniences are available: flat screen TVs, Ipod docks and a free wireless internet connection. The rooms look out either onto the road or onto a narrow internal courtyard, so there is not much natural light in the rooms, which isn't such a bad thing during the summer.

If you enjoy your comforts, try the Deluxe rooms.

Surprise number five: the crypt. Situated beneath the building and accessible by the back of the reception, there is a small ancient crypt which will turn you into a budding archaeologist.

If this is not for you, the hotel has a pleasant sitting room on the top floor and 24 hour room service. In short, The Inn at the Roman Forum is a surprising hotel to be found in the Monti area, an area more accustomed to traditional places. But then isn't Rome always a city full of surprises?
